The prospect of RB Leipzig and Germany striker Timo Werner signing for Liverpool next year is “at least a possibility”, according to a report on Premier League transfer targets for 2020.
Bleacher Report published an article stating the top targets of several Premier League clubs for next year, with the 23-year-old mentioned as a prospective signing for the Reds.
Dean Jones, who wrote the piece for Bleacher Report, said: “A new forward is of interest to them in January, and RB Leipzig’s Timo Werner continues to be a man on their radar. Whoever comes in would have to be happy with a back-up role to this year’s main men, but of all the rumours out there right now, he is at least a possibility.”
In March of this year, German media outlet Kicker reported of the Reds’ interest in the 23-year-old striker, although RB Leipzig managing director Oliver Mintzlaff was adamant that the Bundesliga club would not be obliged to sell him during the summer.
Werner has been in imperious form this season, with 11 Bundesliga goals in as many games and 15 goals in 17 matches in all competitions, as well as providing seven assists. [via TransferMarkt]
He has seven goals in his last four matches for RB Leipzig, following up a DFB-Pokal brace against Wolfsburg with a hat-trick against Mainz in an 8-0 Bundesliga drubbing and two goals in a 4-2 win over Hertha Berlin last weekend. [via TransferMarkt]
That kind of form isn’t completely out of the blue from the German, either, having hit 76 goals in 131 games for RB Leipzig. He has scored at least 19 goals in each of the last three seasons and looks certain to surpass that mark again this term.
Roberto Firmino, Liverpool’s first-choice centre-forward, has just three goals all season and hasn’t scored in nearly two months, despite playing nine matches for the Reds since his last goal. [via TransferMarkt]
Werner’s scoring record for RB Leipzig has been phenomenal, while his tally of seven assists shows that he can also create plenty of goals for team-mates.
While Firmino has proven his quality to Liverpool during his time at Anfield, scoring 69 times for the club, he isn’t a penalty box poacher in the same mould as the Germany international, who has plundered goals with remarkable regularity in Europe’s third highest-rated league, as per UEFA’s association club coefficient.
Werner could be the ideal centre-forward signing to further strengthen the Reds’ already potent attack, with their forwards scoring 26 goals between them so far this term.
