Liverpool

Liverpool v Wigan: The Reaction

Liverpool

Renia – Quiet game overall, largely to do with the work  done by his defense. Score 6.0

Wisdom – He’s coming on very well for a player his age. Even showed some attacking flair in the second half. Score 6.5

Skrtel- Solid performance, kept Wigan at bay. Seemed to work better in this formation. However you can see an improvement in his overall ball control, since adjusting to Rodgers’s style of play. Score 7.5

Agger – Improved a lot since his last performance. Him and Skrtel were an impenetrable force. Score 7.5

Erinque- Star performer. Looked inventive and accomplished in his role. Worked well with Johnson on the left hand side and posed a real threat going forward. Made some terrific passes, including the assist. Deserved his goal and maybe was unfortunant not to score a second. Score 8.0

Johnson – Playing on the wing really suited Johnson, as it played to all his strengths. Been a wonder why no-one has played him their in the past. Will be interesting to see if he plays their again in the future. Made some terrific built up play with Erinque and was probably unlucky not to score himself. Score 7.5

Gerrard –  Looks increasingly like a star on the wain. The quality is still their, however the pace has gone and is only showing glimpses of his former self. I think if anything he’s kept his place because of the impact he has on the team and maybe not on form. Was very quiet Overall. Score 6.0

Allen – Wasn’t a game for fancy passes. Struggled to have much of an impact in the game. Although did adequately well when breaking up the play. When Lucas Leiva returns Liverpool will feel a little relieved and curious to see the other dimension Rodgers spoke about.  Score: 5.5

Sterling – Had a quite first-half. However in the second-half we saw more of what we’ve come to expect with a very accomplished display from the youngster. One of Liverpool’s best performers. Score 7.5

Suarez – Fantastic finshes and an overall great display from the Uruguayan, as he made himself a handful for Wigan’s defense. Score 8.5

Suso – Did very well before being substituted. Purely tactical. Score 6.5

Subs:

Henderson – Looked lively throughout the match and made some good passes. For the price they paid for him  expect more from this lad though, has not really lived upto his 20 million price-tag. Should have scored. Score 6.5

Carragher – Did the job he was asked to do, which wasn’t much. Score 6.0

Shelvey – Came on very late, didn’t have an impact. Score 5.0

Wigan

Al Habsi – Wasn’t at fault for any of the goals, they were all just good finishes. Was probably Wigan’s best player. Score 7.5

Ramis – Was caught out a lot by either Johnson or Enrique. Was always on the backburner, never allowed to venture forward. Score 6.0

Caldwell – Was one of the only convincing centre-backs for wigan, without which Liverpool would have scored more. Score 7.5

Figueroa – Got caught for pace as Sterling began to get more of an influence in the game. Some of his decision making skills weren’t very good, which led to the goals. Score 5.5

Boyce – Was lively throughout and one of Wigan’s outlets on the counter-attack. Score 6.5

Watson – Was a commanding presence until getting substituted. Score 5.5

McCarthy – Very Tidy, very busy. Liverpool dealt with him very well though as McCarthy failed to make an impact. Score 6.0

Beausejour – Made a bad mistake for the goal. Tried to make up for it for the remainder of the match with a lot of hard work being done on the left. Score 6.0

Maloney – Never really got going into the game, Liverpool’s midfield easily took Maloney out of the game. Score 5.5

Di Santos – Never got any service or any room from the Liverpool defenders. Score 5.5

Kone – Was tenacious whenever he got the ball. However Wigan didn’t have much and so Kone’s hard work came to no avail. Was unlucky that his goal was ruled offside. Score 6.5

Subs:

Jones – Grafted. However made a few awful challenges. Score 6.0

Gomes – Looked busy and posed the only threat going forward for Wigan in the later stages of the second half. Score 6.5

Miya Never got a look-in. Score 5.0
