The Independent’s Melissa Reddy has heaped praise on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, alluding to the 28-year-old going under the radar.
Van Dijk helped Liverpool to another win and clean sheet following their 1-0 win against Norwich City over the weekend, taking them a step closer to the Premier League title, and Reddy has since lauded the Netherlands international for his contribution this season.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Sunday Supplement, The Independent journalist said: “Virgil van Dijk hasn’t even been spoken about in, you know, Player of the Season and in terms of awards, but he’s a nine out of ten every week.” It is a fair point, with Player of the Season talk mostly being about captain Jordan Henderson of late.
For example, it was only last week when Andy Robertson gave his skipper his backing. Van Dijk, though, surely has to be in the conversation. He has carried the form that saw him win the award last season into this campaign, earning himself a 7.44 average match rating on WhoScored in the process.
Winning 4.8 aerial duels per league game, the second-highest average out of defenders who have played more than 10 games (via WhoScored), he continues to be the division’s standout centre-back and deserves any recognition that comes his way.
Would any player turn down Liverpool?
