Former footballer Tony Cascarino thinks Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha would be a great addition to the Liverpool attack, stating that Jurgen Klopp would be a big fan of the Ivorian’s qualities.
Cascarino was discussing potential destinations for Zaha should he move in the January transfer window, and recalled a previous trip to Selhurst Park at which he felt Zaha demonstrated the attributes to flourish in Liverpool’s frontline. Speaking on TalkSPORT, Cascarino suggested that the 27-year-old has what it takes to be a part of Klopp’s setup.
He said: “I went to Selhurst Park a couple of seasons ago and I watched Liverpool against Palace, and Jurgen Klopp was continually on to Trent Alexander-Arnold about keeping on Zaha. I came away from the game thinking Klopp, with the way he plays, would be really interested in someone like Wilf.
“He got a penalty that day, he got in behind Trent and won a penalty. I think he’d be a player who would fit in well at Liverpool, because he doesn’t stop running.”
Zaha could offer Liverpool something different if he were to join the Anfield giants and provide an intriguing alternative to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane on the wing.
One major difference is the amount of dribbles the winger produces, with Zaha performing an average of five per game in the Premier League, while Salah and Mane produce a combined total of 3.2, according to WhoScored.
That either suggests Liverpool could unlock a new dimension by adding someone like Zaha to their attack, or that Zaha does not, in fact, suit Liverpool – and judging by the Reds’ success to this point, Klopp would surely be forgiven for sticking to the formula that they have profited from so far this season.
That does not necessarily make Cascarino wrong, though it may be a longshot to suggest that Liverpool may heed his advice, even if Zaha appears to possess qualities that could give the Reds a fresh attacking threat.
