Liverpool would be back to square one if they sold this linked-away £54m-rated ace this summer

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have used the last couple of days to look back at their side’s hugely impressive campaign to date, and indeed look ahead to what could be in store for the Merseyside giants between now and the end of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men look set for a second successive season in the Champions League next term given they are firmly lodged inside the Premier League’s top four, with their 2-2 draw at West Brom on Saturday moving them eight points clear of fifth place Chelsea with just three games to go. And given they are currently in the middle of a Champions League semi-final clash with Roma, things could yet get a whole lot better for the Reds this term, in a campaign which appears to have moved Liverpool back into Premier League title contention.

As such, there are many optimistic Liverpudlians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping that the foundations have been laid this term for Klopp to oversee a Premier League title challenge next time round.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Spanish giants Atletico Madrid with a move for Sadio Mane.

Yet Liverpool would be back to square one were they to indeed sell the £54 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, given that the 26-year-old has been magnificent for the club since his arrival from Southampton in 2016.

Ultimately, there was a lot of scepticism when the Reds forked out £34 million on the Senegal international just under two years ago, yet it’s fair to say that he has completely banished any doubts by becoming a key part of Liverpool’s incredible front line in recent times.

Last season, Mane was arguably their most influential and important player in scoring 13 goals and laying on nine assists for Klopp’s side, with the Merseysiders particularly struggling for flair and impetus during his stint away on African Cup of Nations duty last January.

And while Mohamed Salah has been their main man this term, Mane’s efforts cannot be forgotten given that he has managed 17 goals and eight assists for the Reds this time round, combining with Salah and indeed Roberto Firmino in Liverpool’s lethal front three.

Quite simply, if Liverpool are to push on and start challenging for the Premier League title, they simply cannot be in the business of selling their best players.

Yes, they did sanction Philippe Coutinho’s departure during the January transfer window, but letting any of the aforementioned trio would be a huge step in the wrong direction – they combine brilliantly and it remains to be seen how effective they would be if one was taken out of the side.

Salah has rightly deserved the plaudits this season for his remarkable debut season at Anfield, but Mane, like Firmino, has certainly proven his worth once again to become one of the key players in Klopp’s squad.

And that is why selling the Senegalese ace to Atletico would undo all of Klopp’s great work at Liverpool, and ultimately put them back to square one.
