According to a recent report from The Sun, Liverpool are interested in a January move for defender James Tarkowski. The England international currently plays his football at fellow Premier League outfit Burnley and has done so since leaving Brentford back in 2016, with his impressive efforts in the heart of the Clarets backline seemingly attracting the interest of Reds manager Jurgen Klopp.

And that’s because reports suggest that the Premier League leaders are eyeing up a move for the 26-year-old this month in a bid to ease their current injury crisis in the defensive ranks, which was added to by Dejan Lovren on Monday night in their FA Cup defeat at Wolves.

But were the Reds to seal a deal for Tarkowski, who Burnley reportedly value at £50 million, Liverpool supporters would soon forget about liability Lovren.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while there is little doubting that Croatia international Lovren has upped his game following the arrival of Virgil van Dijk 12 months ago, there is still an error in the 29-year-old that is sure to be exploited between now and the end of the season - and with Liverpool fighting for the title, they cannot allow for such a liability.

Clearly, there’s a reason Joe Gomez got the nod ahead of Lovren at the start of the season, and that’s because the Englishman was proving to be an outstanding partner for the brilliant van Dijk in the heart of the Reds backline, whereas the same level of confidence among supporters simply isn’t there when Lovren plays.

Yes, Sergio Aguero’s strike in the 2-1 win for Manchester City over Klopp’s side last week was excellent, but one cannot help feel that Lovren should have done more to block the effort and react quicker to the ball to shut the Argentina international down - quite simply, he is still something of a liability.

But with the Croat having suffered a hamstring problem in the defeat at Wolves on Monday night, Klopp now faces something of a dilemma at centre back given Gomez remains injured, Joel Matip has broken his ribs, and even van Dijk is reportedly suffering from an injury - as such, a move for Burnley’s Tarkowski is absolutely vital this month.

The 26-year-old may be part of a Clarets side struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League this term, but he has proven to be a hugely adept defender at top-flight level in recent times in helping Sean Dyche’s men finish seventh in the top tier last time round.

The Englishman appeared 31 times for the Lancashire-based outfit as they qualified for the Europa League, with much of their success down to their brilliance defensively given they shipped just 39 goals in their 38 league games - only the top five conceded fewer goals over the course of the season.

And Tarkowski played as big a part as anyone in Burnley’s defensive success last time round, to the point that he earned two caps for England in 2018, and was indeed named on Gareth Southgate’s stand-by list for last summer’s World Cup - clearly, he is an extremely talented centre back.

And having appeared 18 times for Dyche’s side this term already, he would go into a Liverpool team up to speed with the Premier League and having excelled at the top level in the last few years - he’d be an ideal addition.

And given just how impressive he has been in the last few years, Reds fans would soon forget about liability Lovren were their side to lure the Englishman to Anfield this month.
