Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are buzzing with their early business in the transfer window and our regulars are confident of challenging for the league next year.
The Reds tasted defeat in the final of the Champions League against Real Madrid, but a top-four finish means they will be playing in Europe’s elite competition again next year. Jurgen Klopp’s side are clearly on the rise and are making some big moves in the transfer market. Naby Keita will seal his move to Anfield in July for £52m and Fabinho will switch Monaco for Merseyside in a deal worth £40m.
A new goalkeeper as well as attacking cover is believed to be on Klopp’s shortlist. The German would be wise to add another centre-back to his roster with Dejan Lovren dividing opinion on the Kop and Joel Matip no longer seen as first-team quality. Our regulars would love to see another world-class defender alongside Virgil van Dijk.
Therefore, Liverpool should make an audacious attempt to sign Inter Milan wonderkid – Milan Skriniar. The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the best defenders in the Serie A following his move from Sampdoria – playing every minute of football for the Nerazzurri last year. As a result of his excellent performances, his market value has skyrocketed to £40.5m according to Transfermarkt.
He would be a significant upgrade on Liverpool’s current centre-backs and would be the perfect partner for van Dijk. Skriniar averaged 2.3 tackles per game last season, according to WhoScored, which is more than any Liverpool defender. He is also an excellent passer of the ball, retaining a 92% pass completion rate, again higher than any other Liverpool defender.
Inter will be unwilling to allow their star defender to leave but may have no choice due to financial fair play constraints. If they are forced into a sale, Liverpool should be quick to pounce.
