Liverpool are unlikely to sign any more players before the transfer window slams shut on August 9th.
After spending £170m on new players, it seems Jurgen Klopp is happy with his squad heading into the new season. Their goalkeeping problem has finally been resolved by signing Alisson Becker while Naby Keita and Fabinho add two world-class options to his midfield. The £13.5m of Xherdan Shaqiri also gives the Reds some much-needed cover on the flanks.
One area Liverpool should look to strengthen further is defence. The £75m addition of Virgil van Dijk in January instantly improved the side as the Reds reached the final of the Champions League. With Joel Matip injured yet again, only Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan are challenging for a starting berth.
Therefore, Klopp should open his chequebook one last time this window and attempt to sign Real Betis defender – Marc Bartra. Valued at £15.75m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard returned to La Liga in January following two years in Germany with Borussia Dortmund. Despite joining halfway through the season, Bartra was named Betis’ Player of the Year for his excellent showings.
The La Masia graduate is an excellent passer of the ball, completing 85% of his passes last season and would slot seamlessly into the Liverpool backline alongside van Dijk. The 27-year-old averaged more tackles, interceptions and clearances per 90 minutes last year than all of Liverpool’s defenders (WhoScored).
His best years are ahead of him, and Bartra is perfectly suited for the Premier League. It won’t be long before Europe’s top clubs come calling if his form continues and Liverpool must make their move before it’s too late.
