Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to worry after watching their side go three Premier League games without a win – two of which came against relegated teams.
The Reds let a two-goal lead slip against West Brom and could only manage a goalless draw against Stoke at Anfield – both sides have now been relegated to the Championship. A 1-0 defeat at the hands of Chelsea has piled the pressure on to finish in the top four. Victory on the final day of the season against Brighton will secure Champions League football on Merseyside next year.
Despite their recent league struggles, Jurgen Klopp’s side progressed to the final of the Champions League following their win over Roma to set up a meeting with Real Madrid at the end of the month. The Reds will head into the clash on their barebones with some key players missing through injury.
Depth is a huge issue for the Reds which Klopp has identified as a top priority in the summer. The striking department is an area of concern and back up to Roberto Firmino is certainly needed. Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke have just one goal between them this season – a quality option up top is required to allow Klopp to rotate.
The man Klopp should target is Real Madrid striker – Karim Benzema – who is valued at £45m by Transfermarkt. The Frenchman has made just 23 starts for the La Liga outfit, scoring five goals. Still only 30-years-old, Benzema has many years left at the highest level. As well as his goals, he has notched nine assists.
Should Zinedine Zidane depart the club, Benzema could follow him out the exit door. The forward could be a massive player under Klopp and add another dimension to the Liverpool attack. He would allow the Reds to rest Firmino while still having a world-class striker up front.
Despite being under contract until 2021, Liverpool should make an audacious attempt to bring the forward to Merseyside.
