Matthijs de Ligt the man to finish Liverpool’s smartest ever recruitment drive

Matthijs de Ligt the man to finish Liverpool’s smartest ever recruitment drive

Liverpool would be wise to sign another centre-back this summer.

The Reds have conducted their transfer business early this summer with the window closing in just two weeks. Jurgen Klopp has splashed £170m to bring Fabinho, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker to Anfield. It seems the German is now happy with his squad heading into the new campaign and will focus on selling for the remainder of the window.

Reports linking Liverpool to Besiktas defender, Domagoj Vida, were wide of the mark and well-respected journalist, James Pearce, believes Klopp will not sign a new centre-back this summer. However, with Joel Matip suffering yet another injury, the former Borussia Dortmund manager would be wise to reconsider. Finding the perfect partner for Virgil van Dijk would complete Liverpool’s best transfer window.

The ideal signing would be Ajax wonderkid – Matthijs de Ligt. Valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Dutchman is widely considered the hottest prospect in world football after breaking into the first-team at Ajax. His performances in the Eredivisie also earned him a role with the Dutch national team.

The 18-year-old would be the perfect long-term partner for van Dijk in the Liverpool defence. Last season, de Ligt made more interceptions and blocks per 90 minutes than Dejan Lovren, Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip. The youngster also bettered Klavan and Matip for aerial duels won (Squawka).

A product of the Ajax academy, de Ligt is an excellent passer of the ball, retaining an 89% pass success rate last season. Similar to van Dijk, he is not afraid to spray the ball long, averaging 3.3 long balls per game (WhoScored).

Landing de Ligt would be an incredible statement of intent and complete Liverpool’s defence for the next decade.
