Liverpool kicked off their Champions League campaign with a historic 3-2 victory over Paris St Germain at Anfield.
The Reds blew the competition away in Europe last year, knocking out Porto, Manchester City and Roma on their way to face Real Madrid in the final. It wasn’t to be in Kyiv with Madrid running out 3-1 winners to deny Liverpool their sixth European crown. Despite the defeat, it was only the start of things to come for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Liverpool were handed a tough group this year and begin their European adventure with a visit from the French champions. The Reds took the lead through Daniel Sturridge and doubled their advantage with a James Milner penalty. Liverpool dominated proceedings, but PSG hit back through Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappe before Roberto Firmino struck in injury time to send Anfield into raptures.
To continue their excellent start to the season, Liverpool should launch a January bid for former West Ham playmaker – Dimitri Payet. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the French playmaker is no stranger to the Premier League following two sensational seasons with the Hammers. Payet was shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award before completing a move back to Marseille.
The 31-year-old continued his exceptional form in Ligue 1, scoring ten goals and registering 24 assists in all competitions last season. Payet was expected to feature for France at the World Cup before a late injury ruined his chances. Eager to make up for lost time, the playmaker has made an excellent start to the new campaign with three goals and two assists in five appearances; including a recent goal of the season contender.
With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain expected to miss the entire season with an injury and Adam Lallana sidelined yet again, landing Payet in January could prove to be a masterstroke.
