Liverpool seem unlikely to make any new signings during the summer transfer window.

Jurgen Klopp has spent £170m to bring Fabinho, Naby Keita, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson Becker to Anfield this summer. The German has also managed to keep all of his star players at the club, tying Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino down to new contracts. It seems the former Borussia Dortmund boss is happy with his squad ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League curtain raiser against West Ham on Sunday.

Despite their excellent additions so far, some Liverpool fans still want to see Klopp sign a new centre-back to partner Virgil van Dijk this summer. Joel Matip missed pre-season after picking up another injury and cannot be relied on. That leaves just Dejan Lovren and Ragnar Klavan to compete for a place in the Liverpool back line. However, Klopp may not need to open his chequebook to find the solution to his problem.

Liverpool Academy star, Nathaniel Phillips, has emerged as a potential first-team star in the future after some impressive showings in pre-season. The 21-year-old joined the Reds from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer back in 2016. He made 20 appearances in Premier League 2 last season, scoring two goals.

His showings earned him a place in Liverpool’s pre-season tour of the United States and Phillips has given Klopp some food for thought following his impressive outings. The Englishman played in front of 101,000 fans against Manchester United and made a fantastic goal-saving block against Alexis Sanchez to delight the Liverpool fans in attendance.

It remains to be seen what role Phillips will have in the first-team next season. Whatever happens, the youngster will have hopes of making the grade after watching Trent Alexander-Arnold rise to the starting eleven from the Academy during Klopp’s reign. He can hold his head high following an excellent summer in the States.
