Liverpool fans hoping to see the Reds land PSG midfielder, Adrien Rabiot, have been dealt a considerable blow.
The transfer window may be closed, but reports emerged that Liverpool had made contact with the player who has less than one year remaining on his contract. Jurgen Klopp was believed to take an interest in the Frenchman and had reportedly engaged in conversation with his mother. However, the Liverpool Echo understands that Liverpool have zero interest in the France international.
With Adam Lallana sidelined with yet another injury and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out for the season, Klopp may be looking to add another quality midfielder to his engine room. Rabiot would have been a great signing but isn’t the creative option that Klopp is looking for. Instead, he should turn his attention to Italy and the Serie A.
The perfect addition to his squad could be Cagliari wonderkid – Nicolo Barella. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the youngster has become a critical player for the Italian side after progressing through their youth academy. Barella made 34 appearances in the Serie A last season, finding the back of the net six times. The 21-year-old continued his impressive form in the new campaign by scoring the winning goal in their recent 1-0 win against Atalanta.
Barella is the ideal box-to-box midfielder that would suit Klopp’s system to a tee. The Italian averaged 2.7 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game last season (WhoScored), highlighting the protection he would offer the back four, no Liverpool midfielder made more. The youngster would have to improve his final ball but working under Klopp would no doubt boost his development.
If Klopp managed to pull this deal off, the Reds could find a long-term midfield partner for Naby Keita.
