While it’s been far from a vintage year for the Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern so far, the punters propping up our bar are at least happy to see the Reds marching into the international break off the back of a thumping win.
Indeed, our local Kopites believe their team is just a few defenders away from truly challenging for the Premier League title, such is the nature of excitement created around their frontline. So, transfer reports from the Times have actually proven rather divisive.
According to them, Barcelona are expected to make a new offer for Philippe Coutinho when the window bursts open in January, having tried and failed to land the midfielder over the course of the summer. Though the Brazilian is undoubtedly one of the best players at Anfield, some of the punters propping up our bar would actually consider letting him leave.
With the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino forming a wonderful attacking trident, the £130m mooted would go some way into restructuring the defence, a tempting prospect for many of our local Liverpudlians.
Should he go for that money, he’d the club’s most expensive ever sale, dwarfing the £75m the Blaugrana splashed out on former teammate Luis Suarez in 2014.
Liverpool certainly do look more balanced without Coutinho in the side, crazy as that sounds. While he’s a magnificent player, trying to shoehorn him in clearly doesn’t work and £130m really is a lot of money…
