Liverpool kept pace with Manchester City following a dominant 4-1 victory over Cardiff at Anfield.
The Reds dominated the first-half and deservedly took the lead through Mohamed Salah who rifled home to give Jurgen Klopp a slender lead at the interval. Following the break, Sadio Mane doubled their advantage with an excellent effort on the turn before Cardiff clawed one back. However, a fine solo goal from Xherdan Shaqiri and a wonderful chip from Mane ensured Liverpool remain level on points with the Citizens.
With Fabinho now settling into the side, Liverpool’s squad is starting to take shape. With Shaqiri operating in central midfield, it seems that Klopp will not attempt to sign a playmaker in January after targeting Nabil Fekir over the summer. However, the German should be aware of the latest reports in Spain surrounding the future of Ousmane Dembele at Barcelona.
Valued at £72m by Transfermarkt, the World Cup winner was signed from Borussia Dortmund last summer to replace Neymar who joined PSG. However, an injury hampered his progress and Dembele slipped down the pecking order following the arrival of Philippe Coutinho. Reports now suggest the winger has been told to find himself a new club.
The 21-year-old, who is confident using either foot, is a tricky winger with lots of pace. His expert ability on the ball makes him a nightmare for defenders, and the youngster possesses the quality to unlock a defence. Under Klopp’s guidance, there is no reason why he couldn’t be moulded into a number ten to link up with Liverpool’s trio of forwards.
His eye for goal and unpredictability could be a huge weapon for the Reds in the title race and give them a welcome boost in the New Year.
