Liverpool supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team move back up into third place in the Premier League table after thumping Watford 5-0 at Anfield on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men were the only side in the top eight of the division to feature in the league over the weekend due to FA Cup commitments, and they very much took advantage by edging closer to Champions League football again next season. Mohamed Salah was again the man of the moment with four goals in the rout, while in-form Roberto Firmino added the other to seal a comprehensive victory for the Reds, thus moving them above Tottenham into third place in the Premier League table, and more importantly seven points clear of fifth place Chelsea.
As such, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their team can continue their fine run of form between now and the end of the season to indeed secure a second successive top four finish.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere with a move to Anfield when his contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in the summer.
And given Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s resurgence since his summer move to Merseyside, Reds boss Klopp must be convinced to replicate that by luring £16.2 million-rated Wilshere (as per Transfermarkt) to the North West.
Ultimately, there is little doubting that Oxlade-Chamberlain is a better and more confident player since his big money move to Liverpool last year, this all after spending six years at Arsenal and appearing close to 200 times for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Yet it was pretty clear that his development was stunting in North London, but he could have easily remained in the comfort zone of a club he knew inside-out and powered through in a bid to earn more regular football, but he instead took the plunge and made a big decision to move to Liverpool.
And it is one that has so far been vindicated as the England international has appeared in all 28 Premier League games for Klopp’s side since his arrival. And given that the most he managed in a single season at Arsenal was 29, it’s evident that he is improving and becoming an important member of the squad at Anfield.
In fact, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s efforts for the Reds has seen him return to Gareth Southgate’s England squad for friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy this week, and has even been tipped by some fans in the Tavern to earn a start for the Three Lions in Amsterdam on Friday.
And while Wilshere still remains an integral part of things at Arsenal, and has actually featured more prominently this season than in any of his last three campaigns at the club, there are parallels between his situation and that of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s.
Ultimately, the fresh start and more regular gametime has seriously helped Oxlade-Chamberlain’s form since arriving at Liverpool – the same could well happen with Wilshere.
And with the Reds likely to lose Emre Can in the summer, further midfield reinforcements may be needed alongside Naby Keita to compensate for the 24-year-old’s expected departure. And who better than someone who has proven his ability against some of the best teams in the world in his career to date.
As such, Oxlade-Chamberlain’s resurgence at Anfield should convince and ultimately urge Klopp and FSG to make a move for Wilshere this summer.
