Liverpool supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team suffer a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League final last weekend.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with the Spanish giants full of confidence after beating Porto, Manchester City, and Roma en route to the showpiece, although they were second-best in Kiev on Saturday night. A Gareth Bale double, the first of which one of the all-time great Champions League final goals, alongside Karim Benzema’s opener sealed the win for Real, in turn clinching a third successive European crown.
Thus, there have been many gutted Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, several of whom are turning their attentions towards the transfer window and as such will be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that Bayern Munich will listen to offers for defender Jerome Boateng.
And with the Reds ideally in need of a perfect Virgil van Dijk partner next season, adding the £40.5 millon-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) would no doubt enhance their title credentials.
Ultimately, there is little doubting that Netherlands international van Dijk has made a big impact on the backline at Anfield since his arrival from Southampton back in January, with the Reds looking a much more solid and resilient side with the Dutchman at the heart of the defence.
However, there remains some concerns over the season-long capabilities of fellow centre backs Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip, as although the former in particular has been better in recent times, both were guilty of costly errors earlier on in the campaign.
As such, Klopp may well be eyeing the perfect van Dijk partner this summer, and he could do a lot worse than seek to lure Boateng back to the Premier League.
The 29-year-old endured a testing spell at Manchester City between 2010 and 2011 in making just 16 Premier League appearances for the Citizens, and ultimately looking hugely out of his depth in English football’s top-flight.
And while that spell may be of concern to Liverpool fans in the Tavern, the Germany international has since become one of the best defenders in Europe at Bayern in appearing 258 times for the club, helping them to six consecutive Bundesliga titles, and indeed the Champions League back in 2013.
Add in a World Cup winner’s medal with Germany from 2014, and the centre back has completely transformed from Premier League flop to centre back stalwart in recent years, and as such would without doubt bolster Liverpool’s central defensive ranks.
With van Dijk authoritative and having excelled in England before, alongside a defender equally adept with the ball at his feet but also strong defensively as well, they could form a formidable partnership – the sort that inspires title challenges.
And with the Reds seeking to bridge the gap to champions City next term, they simply must take advantage of recent reports by moving for Boateng, a move which would give van Dijk the perfect partner at the back, and as such would enhance their title credentials.
