Liverpool remain top of the Premier League following a narrow 1-0 victory against Brighton at the weekend.
The Reds dominated possession but faced a well organised Brighton defence which was extremely difficult to break down. The score remained goalless after the interval but it was Liverpool who took the lead after Mohamed Salah was fouled in the box – converting the resulting spot kick. Jurgen Klopp’s men defended well to win ugly and maintain their lead at the top of the standings.
Klopp is yet to open his chequebook in the January transfer window; the German is seemingly happy with his current roster of players. While his current side have been extremely impressive this season, a new signing could provide a massive boost to their title hopes. With Manchester City boasting one of the best squads in Premier League history, another statement addition from the Reds could be huge.
One man they should consider signing is Barcelona outcast – Philippe Coutinho. Valued at £126m by Transfermarkt, the Brazilian was adored at Anfield after becoming an integral part of the first-team after joining from Inter Milan during Brendan Rodgers’ spell in charge. Coutinho was vital for Klopp but ultimately decided to leave the club last January, joining the Catalan giants in a deal worth up to £142m.
The 26-year-old made an instant impact at the Nou Camp, helping Barcelona secure a domestic double but has struggled to impress in the current campaign. The Brazil international has slipped down the pecking order after being criticised by both fans and pundits in Spain. Struggling to find his best role in the team, he has often been overlooked with Ousmane Dembele preferred leading to reports from Mundo Deportivo that an early exit could be on the cards.
Coutinho could be the final piece of the puzzle for the Reds – they have often missed a creative influence in midfield this season. Indeed, his departure left a sour taste in the mouth of many supporters, but his world-class ability could be what the club needs to finally secure the Premier League trophy. After pulling the plug on Nabil Fekir, a move for Coutinho should be seriously considered.
Liverpool fans, would you take Coutinho back?
