Possible Can swap deal would represent brilliant business for Klopp’s Liverpool

Liverpool supporters have been pretty quiet in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team go down 1-0 at Chelsea on Sunday, thus failing to seal their place in the top four for next season.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with last year’s champions off the back of booking their place in the Champions League final, this all despite losing 4-2 at Roma at the Stadio Olimpico in midweek. And the Reds were unable to get back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as an Olivier Giroud header 13 minutes before half time was enough to seal all three points for Antonio Conte’s side, thus moving them to within three points of Klopp’s team in the table.

Consequently, there have been many frustrated Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are growing increasingly concerned at the prospect of potentially missing out on a top four spot this season.

In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that, as part of a deal to take Emre Can to Juventus, their club have enquired about luring Sami Khedira away from the Italian giants.

And if the Reds do indeed pull off a possible swap deal involving Can and the Juve ace, it would represent brilliant business for Klopp’s side.

Ultimately, 24-year-old Can has been destined to leave Liverpool for a while now, what with his contract up this summer and the midfielder having seemingly showed little desire to pen an extension.

Thus, it’s likely that Klopp and his side have been preparing for the German’s departure for some time now, and with injury having ruled Can out of their last ten matches, they have seen a glimpse of what things will be like if and when he moves on this summer.

Yet bringing Khedira to Anfield in return for the former Bayern Munich star would undoubtedly represent great business for the club, as it’s arguable that, even at the age of 31, the Juventus ace would be an upgrade on his compatriot.

Clearly, the midfielder has been one of the best in European football throughout his career, be it helping Stuttgart win the Bundesliga back in 2007, being part of the Real Madrid team that won La Liga in 2012 and the Champions League in 2014, or indeed helping Germany to World Cup success also in 2014.

And with back-to-back Serie A titles at Juventus, and a third seemingly on the way, Khedira has won the league title at every club he has been at in his career – it can’t be a coincidence given how influential and significant he has been to all those clubs during his respective spells there.

And with Liverpool seemingly in need of a more industrious figure in the heart of their midfield, the sort that can break up play and help protect the back four, Khedira ticks all the boxes and could well be the man to do just that.

Yes, Can is a lot younger and has proven his worth to the Reds in recent years, but he is seemingly leaving anyway – but for Liverpool to potentially get a player in return, Khedira no less, would be brilliant business.

It might even be a deal that can take the Reds on another level next season, and thus see them competing for the Premier League title in 12 months’ time.
