The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are encouraged by reports linking their side with a move for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.
Monaco were last season’s shock Champions League package as they stormed to the semi-finals of the competition only to be dumped out by Juventus. The French side certainly delivered plenty of eye-catching performances in Europe, particularly during both legs of their last-sixteen tie with Manchester City, which they eventually won on away goals after a thoroughly entertaining 6-6 draw.
The summer transfer window was rather unfortunate for Monaco as 4 of the most instrumental players in their Champions League run and French-title victory departed the club. However, they did manage to keep hold of their excellent young talent Thomas Lemar despite months of speculation linking him with a move to the Premier League.
With the January transfer window fast-approaching, speculation regarding Lemar’s future has begun to resurface in the last 24 hours as The Mirror report Liverpool are set to step up their interest in the French winger.
In the current market, Liverpool would do well to land Lemar for a fee in the region of £90m with Arsenal having offered around that, but their interest at least demonstrates there is money available to spend at the club.
And Liverpool will need to utilise all their available resources and secure plenty more signings, particularly in defensive positions, if Klopp’s side can realistically expect to mount a title-challenge next season.
The possibility of catching runaway leaders Manchester City already seems a ludicrous impossibility for Liverpool in the current campaign.
But if Klopp receives the financial backing from FSG that appears to be available to him if the Lemar reports are to be believed, then he will be able to build a side that is capable of going toe to toe with City at the top of the table next season.
