Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their team reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 10 years courtesy of a 5-1 aggregate victory over Manchester City.
Jurgen Klopp’s men held a 3-0 lead over the Premier League champions-elect ahead of the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, yet the Citizens gave them something to think about early on when Gabriel Jesus netted after just two minutes. However, the Reds hit back and second half goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino sealed victory on the night and a comprehensive aggregate success for the Merseyside giants, thus booking their place in the last four for the first time since 2008.
As such, there have been many thrilled Reds fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are daring to dream about possible European success for their side this term, with Klopp’s men set to find out their semi-final opponents on Friday.
And many of our resident Liverpudlians are speculating upon what their success in Europe’s elite competition could do regarding the future of wantaway midfielder Emre Can, with several of the opinion that their side surely have renewed hope of securing an agreement with the 24-year-old after reaching the last four.
Ultimately, the Germany international has played a key part in Liverpool’s success under Klopp in the last few seasons, with Can missing just six Premier League games last term in their run to fourth place in the division, and appearing in 26 this time round to further underline his status as an integral part of Klopp’s squad.
However, the 24-year-old sees his contract expire at the end of the season and as such has not penned an extension, albeit he has also not made a decision on where his destination will be.
As such, it’s not completely out of the question that the German could stay at Anfield, and Liverpool’s hand will surely be strengthened by their advancement to the last four of the Champions League.
The Reds proved in swatting aside runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City that they belong amongst the European elite once again, with it clear that Klopp is building something special at Anfield.
And given they have beaten Pep Guardiola’s side in each of their past three meetings, they will surely be looking to mount a serious title challenge next season.
All in all, the Reds are heading in the right direction, and Can could play a key part in their future success having already proven his worth under Klopp since his appointment back in October 2015 – he was arguably their most influential midfielder last season.
But the fact that the Reds now have a major European scalp under their belt in beating City could well persuade Can that his future lies at Anfield, as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League is no mean feat – City have done it just once in the last seven years, United haven’t at all since 2011.
As such, reaching the last four of the Champions League will surely give the Reds renewed hope of securing an agreement with Can before he leaves for free in the summer.
