According to a report from Yahoo Sport UK, Tottenham remain open to the possibility of cashing in on defender Toby Alderweireld this summer. The 29-year-old has been linked with a move away from North London for much of the close season given his current contract situation, what with the Belgium international out of contract next summer, but having the option of a one-year trigger which would bring a £25 million release clause into play.

And while their £75 million valuation appeared to put teams off, Spurs are reportedly open to selling Alderweireld, and these recent reports should encourage Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool to make a move which could thus win them the Premier League title.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while he struggled with injury and a slight dip in form last season, there is no doubting that Alderweireld is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, having been a part of a Tottenham defence that are now one of the most resolute in the division.

The 29-year-old struck up a sensational partnership with Jan Vertonghen in the 2015/16 season to help Mauricio Pochettino’s side to the best defensive record in the division, before doing the same again in their run to second place in 2017.

Yes, Davinson Sanchez produced the goods last season to keep Alderweireld out of the Tottenham side, but one simply mustn’t forget his efforts in the preceding two seasons in delivering as one of the best centre backs in Europe.

And in a Liverpool side whereby questions are still likely to be asked of their defensive capabilities, the 29-year-old would go some way to making a big difference – a difference which could well result in a Premier League title.

Virgil van Dijk’s arrival back in January had a big impact on the Reds backline in helping to solidify and shore it up, and while Dejan Lovren did well alongside the Dutchman, there are still some doubts over his, and indeed Joel Matip’s, season-long capabilities given they both made high-profile errors last season.

And with it arguable that it is indeed the backline that is preventing Liverpool from seriously challenging for the title, given they are without doubt one of the most lethal attacking teams in the country, one addition in that department could make all the difference, especially one as good as Alderweireld.

Thus, with Spurs reportedly open to the possibility of selling the defender, Liverpool must seek to take advantage by striking a deal which could well win them the Premier League title.
