Liverpool supporters have been making a lot of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side reach the final of the Champions League courtesy of a 7-6 aggregate victory over Italian giants Roma in the last four.
Jurgen Klopp’s men went into the second leg on Wednesday night with a commanding 5-2 lead after a scintillating display in the first leg at Anfield, and they led 2-1 at half time at the Stadio Olimpico thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Georgino Wijnaldum to further tighten their grip on the tie. However, the home side netted three times in the second period to give the Merseysiders something to think about, but the Reds held on to book their place in the showpiece later this month, where they will face defending champions Real Madrid.
Thus, there have been many buoyant and delighted Reds fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are absolutely thrilled at seeing their side return to the Champions League final for the first time since 2007, and thus go in search of a sixth European crown.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Liverpudlians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Tottenham with a move for Spartak Moscow midfielder Fernando.
And these developments should entice the Merseyside giants to make a summer move for Spurs’ £27 million-rated ace Victor Wanyama (as per Transfermarkt), who could suffer from Fernando’s possible arrival.
Ultimately, Mauricio Pochettino has plenty of options to choose from in the middle of the park at Tottenham, what with Wanyama, Eric Dier, Mousa Dembele, and Harry Winks all adept at Premier League level.
Yet the former has struggled to command regular football since coming back from injury at the start of the year, with just five Premier League starts underlining that messrs Dier and Dembele appear to be ahead of him in the pecking order.
And adding another midfielder in Fernando will only serve to push the Kenya international even further down the pecking order, and potentially out of the club altogether with reports last week suggesting that he could be sold by the North London outfit this summer.
And with Liverpool arguably in need of a Wanyama-like midfielder to mount a serious title charge next season, they should seek to take advantage and lure the 26-year-old to Anfield.
Ultimately, the defence has taken a lot of criticism this season such have been their vulnerabilities, but they aren’t often helped by a seeming lack of protection from the central midfielders.
And if Liverpool are eyeing a title challenge next time round, it appears that they need someone adept at breaking up the play and screening the back four to thus provide further protection for the backline – Wanyama is the man to do just that.
Be it off the ball making timely interceptions and key tackles, or indeed on the ball looking to get the ball forward and launch attacks, the 26-year-old has it all, and he certainly proved that in helping Spurs finish second in the Premier League last season.
The Reds have been linked with the Kenyan star in recent months, and with Tottenham reportedly interested in another midfielder in Fernando, these developments should trigger the Merseysiders to make a summer move for the 26-year-old.
