Recent Tottenham reports should prompt Liverpool to make summer move for £16.2m-rated ace

Liverpool supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team take a giant step towards the Champions League final courtesy of a 5-2 win over Roma in the first leg of their semi-final on Tuesday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men eased past Premier League champions Manchester City in the quarter-finals to set up a meeting with the Italian giants, who brilliantly came from 4-1 down to knock Barcelona out in the last eight. And they will have to produce another miracle at the Stadio Olimpico next week as well as braces from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as well as a Sadio Mane strike helped secure an emphatic victory for the Reds, although Roma do have some hope after netting two late goals at Anfield on Tuesday.

Nonetheless, there have been many thrilled Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are confident that their team can indeed get the job done in Rome next week, although some are wary of their opponents given they have already overturned a three-goal deficit in the Champions League this term.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Tottenham are set to cash in on midfielder Mousa Dembele this summer.

And these recent reports should prompt the Merseyside giants into making a move for the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, as his arrival and presence in the midfield may turn the Reds into genuine Premier League contenders.

Ultimately, the 30-year-old has been one of the best central midfielders in the top-flight in the last few years, forming quite the partnership with Victor Wanyama in Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield last term en route to helping Spurs to a second place finish.

And he has again proven his worth this season with 38 appearances in all competitions for the North London outfit, with arguably his best display coming in their 2-2 draw with Juventus in the Champions League back in February, in which the Belgium international ran the show to further underline his incredible pedigree.

Clearly, Dembele has absolutely everything required to be a quality midfielder in the Premier League, be it an incredible awareness and reading of the game to make telling interceptions and break play up in the middle of the park, or indeed an ability to make driving runs and telling passes to get the front men into the game.

And in a Liverpool midfield arguably lacking that defensive presence, he’d be absolutely ideal.

Ultimately, while the Reds backline has taken much of the flack for their struggles defensively this term, some of that can be pinned down to not having the necessary protection just in front of them – Dembele could provide that.

And while there may be concerns over whether the 30-year-old would fit into Klopp’s style of play, he is hugely dynamic and will still look to get forward wherever possible – the difference is he would also be able to offer the stability in front of the back four alongside that.

And with Emre Can set to leave the club this summer, questions over Adam Lallana’s fitness, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out injured until next season, Klopp may seek to strengthen his central midfield ranks over the summer.

And he should look no further than Spurs and 30-year-old Dembele following recent reports.
