Liverpool supporters have been making all the noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side brilliantly dispatch of Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men battered Porto 5-0 in the round of 16 to set up a mouth-watering tie with Pep Guardiola’s side in the last eight, with the Reds the only team to have beaten the Citizens in the Premier League this season. And the Merseyside giants inflicted another defeat on the North West outfit as first half goals from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Sadio Mane sealed a routine victory for Klopp’s side, thus setting them up perfectly for the return leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
Consequently, there have been many delighted and buoyant Liverpudlians in the Tavern this week, several of whom are daring to dream about possible European success this season, what with their side just one game away from knocking out one of the favourites for the competition.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that West Ham are interested in a move for attacking midfielder Shinji Kagawa this summer.
And this news must be of interest to Klopp and the Liverpool hierarchy, and it should prompt them to make a summer move for reported target Manuel Lanzini, who is valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt.
Ultimately, the Argentine has seamlessly filled the shoes vacated by Dimitri Payet at the London Stadium back in January 2017, with the 25-year-old netting an impressive eight goals for the Hammers last season in their run to 11th place in the Premier League table.
And with three goals and six assists this time round as well, it’s clear that the attacker is having a huge influence on this West Ham side, to the point that he has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent times.
And the Hammers’ reported interest in Kagawa, another more attack-minded central midfielder, should be music to the ears of Klopp and the Reds hierarchy, with it plausible that the East London club are making plans for Lanzini’s departure this summer.
Yes, Liverpool will welcome Naby Keita to the club during the close season from RB Leipzig, but one still senses that they could do with a more like-for-like replacement for Philippe Coutinho following his departure to Barcelona back in January. And Lanzini could be that man.
