Jamie Redknapp is so wrong: Joe Gomez absolutely deserved Team of the Week spot

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have been making a lot of noise in recent times after seeing their team maintain their 100% start to the new Premier League season on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp’s men went into their clash with Leicester City having got past West Ham, Crystal Palace, and Brighton in their first three matches, thus propelling them to the summit of the division ahead of their trip to the King Power Stadium. And the Reds remain top of the pile as first half goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino set the visitors on their way to victory, and while Rachid Ghezzal got one back for the Foxes after the break, it wasn’t enough to deny Liverpool all three points.

Subsequently, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians up and down the country in recent times, although several are likely to have taken issue with Jamie Redknapp’s Team of the Week, as published in his column for The Daily Mail.

And that’s because the ex-Reds midfielder opted for Everton’s Kurt Zouma as his centre back partner for Watford’s Craig Cathcart, whereas the efforts of Liverpool’s Joe Gomez at Leicester on Saturday suggest that he should have been in the eleven instead of the Toffees defender.

Ultimately, Watford’s Cathcart certainly deserves his place in the side having netted the winner for the Hornets in their 2-1 success over Tottenham, at the same time producing a solid defensive effort to keep the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli quiet throughout the match.

And while Everton’s Zouma enjoyed a fine debut in arguably being the Toffees’ best player in their 1-1 draw against Huddersfield, Liverpool’s Gomez played as big a part as anyone in maintaining the Reds’ 100% start to the new season.

The 21-year-old has been given the opportunity to shine alongside Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the Liverpool backline following Dejan Lovren’s exertions at the World Cup, and the Englishman has taken his chance brilliantly in striking up a formidable partnership with the former Southampton centre back.

And while van Dijk has on the whole outperformed his younger defender, Saturday saw Gomez produce his best performance of the season and arguably Liverpool’s best at the King Power Stadium to help Klopp’s side to all three points.

Be it defending against the pacey Demarai Gray in the first half or against ex-Manchester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho in the second, Gomez was up to whatever was thrown at him, while his incredible block to deny James Maddison in the second half prevented a certain goal following van Dijk’s inability to thwart the Leicester man earlier in the move.

Add in the fact that he is supremely comfortable on the ball, he finished with a pass success rate of 83%, and the 21-year-old is growing into the centre back Liverpool desperately need alongside van Dijk – Lovren will have a battle getting back into the team if Gomez continues his fine form.

Thus, while Zouma deserves credit for his efforts for Everton on Saturday, Redknapp is so wrong to select him over Liverpool’s Gomez, valued at £19.8 million by Transfermarkt, in his Team of the Week.
