Liverpool are preparing to offer the Dutch talisman Virgil van Dijk a new contract which accounts to more than £50m, according to Football Insider.
The 28-year-old has transformed the Reds’ defensive line since his arrival from Southampton in January 2018 for £75m in a world-record deal and is now seen amongst the best centre-backs in the world. Furthermore, this was highlighted by his second-place finish in the 2019 Ballon d’Or just behind Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. Having averaged 4.8 clearances and 5.2 long balls in the Premier League during the current campaign (as per Whoscored), his all-round ability in defending and passing has triggered the club’s owners to make it their top priority to tie down the Netherlands international with a new long-term deal.
The report states that the club’s new terms will give him a major salary hike on the £125,000-a-week he secured when he signed from the Saints. Van Dijk is set to be offered a contract upwards of £150,000-a-week in addition to bonuses which could go above and beyond £50m. This will be determined by his goals and clean sheets for the Anfield club during competitive matches. The three critical financial figures would be a £6m bonus on signing, a £5m loyalty bonus and a further £4m when he plays over 150 games for Liverpool.
Van Dijk has played every minute of this season’s unbelievable Premier League campaign, which has seen Liverpool break many records on the way. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won all but one of their 25 games and look set to top Manchester City’s 100-point finish during the 2017/18 campaign.
This is the sort of deal where financial figures are completely irrelevant and where the simple term ‘sign at all costs’ comes to mind. The club’s owners know what the fans want and would be wise to secure the services of Van Dijk beyond 2023, when his current contract expires, as per TransferMarkt. Touted as Liverpool’s most irreplaceable player and with Juventus reported to be interested in his services, FSG must be praised for their quick actions if they get him a new contract secured. Whatever the price, it has to be paid. There is no defender like him in world football that could do a similar job.
While the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Alisson and Roberto Firmino being crucial to the team in their own right, no player has been more influential during the Jurgen Klopp era.
