Reportedly available for £87.6m, Liverpool must pay up to lure world-class star to Anfield

Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern have used the last few days to look back on their team’s impressive season to date, and indeed look ahead to what could be in store for their side between now and the end of the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp’s men are all but certain to secure Champions League football again next season given they sit third in the Premier League with just three games to go, with their 2-2 draw at West Brom on Saturday moving them eight points clear of fifth place Chelsea in the race for a top four spot. And given they are currently in the midst of a Champions League semi-final against Roma, there is still plenty to play for between now and the summer for the Merseyside giants.

As such, there are many optimistic Liverpudlians in the Tavern at present, several of whom have been delighted with their team’s efforts this season, which look like setting them up for a possible Premier League title push next time round.

In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds fans to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that goalkeeper Jan Oblak has a €100 million (£87.6 million) release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract.

And while that figure would see the world-record fee for a shot-stopper completely smashed, Liverpool simply must pay up to bring the world-class 25-year-old to Anfield this summer.

Ultimately, Reds boss Klopp sought to improve his defensive ranks during the January transfer window with the addition of Virgil van Dijk, and there’s little doubting that his arrival has had a positive impact on Liverpool defensively.

And now it’s time to improve the goalkeeping ranks.

Clearly, neither Simon Mignolet nor Loris Karius have convinced enough during their respective spells at Anfield to suggest that they can be the answer to their goalkeeping concerns.

And although the latter appears to have won Klopp’s trust for the number one jersey, and has arguably been better in recent times, he is still not in the same league as the likes of David De Gea, Thibaut Courtois, and Ederson, the latter two who have played an integral part in their team’s respective title successes.

And for Liverpool to become a genuine title contender in seasons to come, they need a goalkeeper of that ilk as well. And Slovenia international Oblak is of that ilk.

The 25-year-old has been magnificent for Diego Simeone’s Atletico in recent times in keeping 90 clean sheets and shipping just 95 goals in 156 appearances for the Spanish side.

And while the Atletico backline has played a part in those staggering numbers, Oblak certainly has as well, and as such is without doubt the world-class goalkeeper Liverpool need to challenge for the title.

Yes, £87.6 million is a lot of money for any player let alone a goalkeeper, but given how important messrs Courtois and Ederson have been in recent title successes for Chelsea and Manchester City respectively, it may well be the going rate nowadays.

Thus, the Reds must seek to match Oblak’s release clause this summer and subsequently bring him to Anfield, as doing so would seriously enhance their Premier League title credentials.
