Liverpool’s perfect start to the 2018/19 season came to an end against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup.

Jurgen Klopp rotated his line up heavily for the visit from the Blues and ultimately paid the price with Liverpool now able to win only three trophies this season. The Reds took the lead through Daniel Sturridge but were pegged back after Emerson slotted home from Eden Hazard’s free kick. With penalties looming, Hazard produced a moment of magic to skip past four Liverpool players before lashing the ball past Simon Mignolet into the top corner.

Many players were given their first appearance of the season during the defeat, one of which was Dejan Lovren. The Croatian was an important player for the Reds last season, but inconsistency has always proved to be his downfall. The former Southampton defender failed to deal with Alvaro Morata for the majority of the game and will struggle to displace Joe Gomez in the Liverpool back four.

To replace Lovren, Liverpool should make a move for Benfica defender – Ruben Dias. Valued at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old has developed into a key player for the Portuguese side after graduating from the club’s youth academy. Dias has featured in all six of Benfica’s games this season, providing one assist for his team-mates.

Signing the youngster would add more youth and quality to the Liverpool backline. Dias has already captained his side despite his young age and bringing his leadership qualities to the squad could be useful. Dias would also provide perfect back up for Virgil van Dijk and Gomez – who has struggled with injuries in the past.

The Reds would have to break the bank to bring him to Anfield, but in the long-term, it would most definitely be worth it.
