Liverpool remained top of the Premier League after a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Leicester on Saturday.

Jurgen Klopp dropped Naby Keita for the trip to the King Power Stadium, but his presence wasn’t missed as the Reds took an early lead through Sadio Mane. They doubled their advantage just before the interval with Roberto Firmino heading home his first goal of the season from a corner. An error from Alisson allowed Rachid Ghezzal to get one back. However, the Reds managed to hang on and keep their place at the top of the league.

Liverpool looked far from convincing in the victory, but three points is all that Klopp will care about. It was a tale of two entirely different stories in the Liverpool attack against the Foxes with Mohamed Salah struggling yet again. The Egyptian squandered a number of chances and was eventually replaced by Xherdan Shaqiri much to his surprise. It appears the ongoing feud with the Egyptian FA weighs heavily on his shoulders during his second season on Merseyside. On the other hand, Mane continued his sensational start to the campaign.

His first-half strike took his tally to four goals in just four games this season – putting him joint-top of the Premier League scoring charts. His blistering pace and dribbling ability was a constant threat on the left flank, and his partnership with Andy Robertson is blossoming with every game. His performances have not gone unnoticed with the Senegal international scooping the PFA Fan’s Player of the Month award for August.

With Mane continuing to shine, the Reds need to tie him down to a new contract as soon as possible.
