Just when you thought Liverpool had solved the goalscoring conundrum in the Premier League the Reds then went and drew a blank against Stoke at the weekend.
Clearly the game against Norwich was an attacking patch as purple as their away kit as just a week after slamming five past the canaries Liverpool once again looked toothless in front of goal.
It’s clearly an area of Brendan Rodgers’ team that lacks depth and real potency, so the Liverpool manager is setting his sights on bringing Hamburg youngster Son Heung-min to the club to bolster his attacking options.
The reds are preparing an £8.4million bid in January for the South Korean after some impressive performances in the Bundesliga this season and, more importantly, Son has managed to find the net four times already this season in just seven games.
He’s a player that is turning a few heads around Europe and clearly the 20 year old is beginning to realise his potential. Son clearly has a goalscoring touch and can play in the wide areas aswell as he has tireless attitude and pace which would suit the Premier League perfectly.
It definitely sounds like the South Korean is a better option than Fabio Borini as the minute as the £10million man has failed to find the net in the league so far. However it feels to me Liverpool need something more than a hard working youngster and a hot prospect, they need a proven goalscorer in the Premier League that can guarantee goals.
Even staple front man Luis Suarez has failed to hit the back of the net regularly so Liverpool need somebody they can rely on, someone in the mold of kop favourites Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush. These players aren’t easy to find but if Rodgers looks hard enough there are some strikers out there worth taking a gamble on.
West Brom’s Shane Long wouldn’t be a bad shout for Liverpool at the moment, with good pace and a decent goalscoring record he could fit nicely into Rodgers’ plans and he may be able to take him for less than £10million.
Liverpool could even look to capatalise on the unsettled Demba Ba and Daniel Sturridge, both have their fair share of goals in the Premier League and could be willing to move for a new challenge. Although either of these two could cost too much for the reds as the club aim to tighten their purse strings.
There are certainly some interesting options out there for Liverpool with even Darren Bent and Celtics Gary Hooper capable of being Anfields next hero. As for Son Heung-min, the transfer would certainly be a step in the right direction for Liverpool but if they care to look elsewhere then Rodgers’ side could be taking strides rather than steps.
