Liverpool supporters in the Transfer Tavern eagerly anticipating the Champions League final in Kiev this weekend, as their team take on Real Madrid hoping to clinch a sixth European crown.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have produced the goods in Europe’s elite competition this term to reach Saturday’s showpiece, getting past the likes of Porto, Manchester City, and Roma to book their spot against Zinedine Zidane’s Real this weekend. And with the Reds going into Saturday’s encounter off the back of a 4-0 success over Brighton in their previous match, confidence is high among our resident Liverpudlians that their team can indeed go on and win the Champions League.
After that though, attentions will turn towards the summer transfer window, with recent reports linking Riyad Mahrez with a move to Manchester City sure to intrigue those Reds fans lining up at the bar in the Tavern.
And that’s because their side should seek to join the race for the £45 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), as adding the Algeria international would without doubt boost their Premier League title chances next term.
Ultimately, while Klopp’s side deserve great credit for finishing in the top four and reaching the Champions League final, they appear even further away from challenging for the league title, what with the Reds finishing 25 points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s City.
Thus, serious investment is needed over the summer, and were they to pinch Mahrez from under the noses of the Citizens during the close season, it would serve to boost their title hopes.
And that’s because the 27-year-old would bring even more match-winning quality to this Liverpool side, with Mahrez able to conjure something up out of very little, and thus provide moments of brilliance to win matches at Premier League level.
Significantly though, his addition would add further depth to the forward ranks at Anfield as, although the front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah is arguably the best attacking unit in Europe, the options besides that trio aren’t of the highest standard.
Yes, Danny Ings did well for Burnley a few years back, but injures have set him back somewhat, while Dominic Solanke is still young and took until the final game of the Premier League season to record his first goal of the campaign – simply, there aren’t good enough to deputise.
Mahrez would be though, while he would also serve to help the Reds find a way past those lower Premier League sides, given they dropped four points against West Brom, three against Swansea City, and two against Stoke City, amongst others, this time round.
And for the Merseyside giants to be challenging at the summit, they have to win those types of games – Mahrez’s quality, specifically his ability to produce a moment of brilliance, will aid them in that quest.
So not only would pinching the 27-year-old from City prevent them from strengthening, but it would serve to significantly bolster Liverpool, in turn boosting their Premier League title hopes next season.
