Although the return to fitness of Fernando Torres and goal scoring form of David Ngog are very much positives for the Reds attacking line, Hodgson looks set to add further attacking options to his squad as he looks to secure a deal to bring 32 year old French striker David Trezeguet to the club from Italian side Juventus.
The World Cup winner has impressed during his time in Serie A with 138 goals in 245 appearances for the Turin club and could be seen as an ideal partner for Torres to help fire the Reds to a potential title challenge.
Despite constant speculation regarding a move to Italian side Inter Milan, midfielder Javier Mascherano looks set to move to Spanish giants Barcelona, having reportedly agreed personal terms with the Catalan club.
However, one stumbling block in any potential deal remains in the transfer fee. Barcelona are believed to have had a £12 million bid for the Argentinean rejected as Liverpool are looking for a fee closer to £21 million to secure his signature.
Mascherano has made his discontent at the Anfield club very much public in recent months and both the player and the club will be hoping that a deal can be agreed in the near future to enable both parties to move on down their respective footballing paths.
While Mascherano will not leaving the club to join Inter Milan, one play who could be heading in that direction is that of Dutch playmaker Dirk Kuyt. Former boss Rafa Benitez, who is now in change at Inter, has made his interest in the World Cup finalist known in recent weeks having made a £7.5 million bid which included Nigerian striker Victor Obinna heading in the other direction.
However this bid was quickly shot down by the Liverpool hierarchy and it remains to be seen whether the Italian club will return with an improved bid in what promises to be an interesting last 8 days in the transfer market for the Merseyside club.
