Liverpool were victorious in the Merseyside derby following an injury-time winner from Divock Origi.

In just his second Liverpool appearance in 15 months, the Belgian was on hand to capitalise on Jordan Pickford’s late error to send the Kop into chaos. Both sides missed chances at Anfield, but it was the hosts who left with all three points. The result keeps the pressure on Manchester City in the Premier League title race and maintains Jurgen Klopp’s unbeaten start to the season.

The German strengthened heavily during the summer and will be pleased to see his new signings star against the Toffees. Alisson Becker denied Andre Gomes with a world-class stop in the first half as well as stopping Theo Walcott who raced through on goal. After a difficult start to life on Merseyside, defensive midfielder Fabinho also excelled against Marco Silva’s men. The Brazil international was overlooked for the mid-week fixture against Paris St Germain but gave Klopp plenty of food for thought after a dominant midfield display.

The former Monaco man won six of out seven attempted tackles as well as completing 86% of his 57 passes (via WhoScored). His tough tackling helped protect the Liverpool defence from the significant threat of Richarlison, but his positioning let him down at times. It’s clear the midfielder is still adapting to the English game and deserves a run of games in the starting eleven to help him acclimatise to Premier League football.

Not only is Fabinho the future of the Liverpool midfield - but he is also the man who can bring the best out of Naby Keita. The former RB Leipzig man is yet to showcase his ability after completing his long-awaited switch to Merseyside this summer. The upcoming busy festive period is the perfect chance for Klopp to get his two signings in the engine room together.
