Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are keeping a close eye on the 2018 World Cup, scanning for potential targets for Jurgen Klopp.
The German has added two players to his squad this summer, Naby Keita arriving from RB Leipzig for £54m and Fabinho sealing a £40m move from Monaco. Both players officially joined the club on July 1 and are set to feature in Liverpool’s first friendly against Chester on Saturday, July 7. They will be joined by a host of players who did not feature at the World Cup.
The Reds are not expected to sign any more players until the tournament has ended but may look at some players who have already returned home. Our regulars were disappointed to see Sadio Mane’s Senegal crash out at the group stage on a fair play ruling. Klopp would be wise to attempt to lure his international team-mate, Kalidou Koulibaly, to Anfield.
Valued at £54m by Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old impressed for his country despite their early exit. The Napoli defender was arguably the best defender in the Serie A last season as his side almost pipped Juventus to the title. He was a key player for Maurizio Sarri, making 43 appearances in all competitions.
Koulibaly is a colossal defender, standing at 6ft 4in tall. He would be the perfect partner for Virgil van Dijk in the heart of the defence and would be a serious threat from set pieces; he scored five goals in the league last season. The Senegalese reads the game exceptionally well and is extremely strong in the tackle.
If Liverpool are serious about challenging for the Premier League title, they need another world-class defender. Koulibaly is just that.
