After being relegated with Stoke City last season, Xherdan Shaqiri will be looking to rebuild his career at Anfield.
Following the Potters’ relegation, Liverpool triggered his £13m release clause. Despite Stoke City’s relegation, it was Shaqiri’s most profitable season in terms of goals. The winger netted eight Premier League goals for the bet365 Stadium outfit. However, the overall quality of some of his performances led much to be desired by the Stoke support.
This is a huge season for Shaqiri to prove his worth. When the player was transferred from Bayern Munich to Inter Milan for, he might have expected his entire career to be played at the top level. However, after being a relative flop at the San Siro, just seven months after his move to Milan, he was on his way to Staffordshire to play for Stoke City.
It is fair to say his career has stagnated. He was surrounded by players of a lesser quality than himself, and he certainly didn’t improve his game that much whilst at Stoke City. He now has the chance to play for a side which has just played in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, and will be challenging for the Premier League title this season.
Of course, with the level of talent the Anfield outfit have going forward, Shaqiri is by no means a guaranteed starter in the Premier League. However, with the volume of games Liverpool will have to play, Xherdan should get plenty of game time to show what he can do in a side filled with stars.
With intelligent attack-minded superstars around him, he has no excuse not to shine at Anfield. Now 26-years-old, this is certainly something of a make or break season for Shaqiri, and undoubtedly his last chance at an elite club if he fails to impress.
