This potential new signing won’t save Liverpool

The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are drinking to forget their terrible opening day performance, it looks like even this man might not save them…

It is no secret by now that Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk has been heavily linked with a move to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.

As good of a signing the powerful Dutchman would be for the Reds, our landlord is under no assumptions that it will save their defence.

Why? Because zonal marking is terrible.

It baffles the landlord as to why Liverpool continue with this tactic of defending set pieces.

With man-marking, everyone knows their job to a tee. They know who they’re marking and if their man scores from a set piece then they’re getting it from their manager and team-mates.

Despite van Dijk’s talents, if Klopp continues to go with the zonal marking style then there will be no avoiding the mistakes at the back from Liverpool most of which do come from set pieces.

If Klopp is going to spend upwards of £50 million to bring the Southampton centre-back to Anfield then he also must be prepared to revamp his defensive tactics.

Liverpool’s attack is one of the strongest in the division but if they don’t bring in better defenders and give them better tactics to work with then they won’t be winning anything for quite some time.
