The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping their side can continue to climb the Premier League table in the coming months…
Jurgen Klopp will be demanding that his side begin their surge up the table with a third straight Premier League victory over Mauricio Pellegrino’s Southampton side this weekend. Liverpool have looked in typically ruthless form in the attacking third this season, with 21 goals to their name already – the third highest in the Premier League. However, it is their defensive abilities that have been acutely scrutinised by fans and pundits alike this season, after a couple of high-profile defeats drew close attention to their glaring defensive frailties.
Considering Liverpool’s defensive record of 17 goals conceded stands as the worst out of the top 8 clubs in the Premier League and the 6th worst in the entire division, it is little surprise that The Mirror report Klopp is set to make another move for Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk in the January window.
But it is unlikely that Klopp in conjunction with FSG, will solely be targeting Van Dijk as the saviour to all their defensive problems – they will need to splash the cash to form a potentially title-winning defensive unit.
As things stand, in addition to Van Dijk, Liverpool require a goalkeeper, another centre-back and one, if not two left-backs of proven quality to take Klopp’s side to the next level.
In addition to the £70 million that will be required to bring Van Dijk to Merseyside, Liverpool will require the investment of at least another £80 million, to attract the desired calibre of player Klopp should be in the market for.
Until Liverpool initiate a significant overhaul of personnel within their defensive ranks, they will continue to fall short of the consistency that is required to be in contention for the Premier League title come May.
