Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are looking forward to this weekend as they know how big a win could be for their club against Southampton.
Indeed, earning the three points against the Saints would represent a huge leap towards a top four finish this season and, certainly, would mean they’re nearer to signing class players in the transfer window.
For sure, the links have already begun and one from The Mirror really does seem to make perfect sense – Ryan Bertrand to Anfield.
It’s a familiar looking rumour, of course, that sees a Southampton player on his way to Liverpool potentially but, aside from that, it is a move that would surely benefit Jurgen Klopp.
It doesn’t take much to realise that the club is weak at the back and the left-back position, despite James Milner’s admirable efforts, is a real issue.
The club lacks balance with him there in terms of going forward on the overlap and, naturally, isn’t as strong defensively with him in a still unfamiliar position.
Bertrand, then, would make the club’s defence seem so much more symmetrical and for a team that is clearly much more potent when it can go wide – see Sadio Mane’s impact – the deal becomes near essential.
Bertrand is at the perfect time in his career now to come into this Liverpool team as it comes of age; he’s a solid, left-footed defender and has Champions League know-how – it’s time for the Reds to go for him.
