Liverpool supporters have been making a huge amount of noise in the Transfer Tavern in the last few hours after seeing their side comprehensively beat Manchester City 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last eight encounter on Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp’s men thumped Portuguese giants Porto 5-0 in the preceding round to book their place in the quarter-finals, a stage they haven’t reached in the last nine years. And their fine European run could be set to continue as first half strikes from Mohamed Salah, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Sadio Mane sealed an outstanding victory for the Merseyside giants, thus giving them a huge advantage heading into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday.
Thus, there have been many delighted Liverpudlians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are absolutely thrilled with their team’s performance on Wednesday night, and thus extremely hopeful of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2008.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Reds supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent comments from Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde suggesting that his side aren’t in the market for Roma goalkeeper Alisson this summer, who has also been linked with Liverpool.
As such, these comments should urge the Merseyside giants to up the ante in pursuit of the £40.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, as landing a goalkeeper will certainly bolster their chances in the Premier League next season.
Ultimately, the goalkeeping ranks at Anfield have been pretty unconvincing for a long time now, with Simon Mignolet solid but not in the same league as the likes of David De Gea and Ederson, while Loris Karius still has one too many errors in him.
And while Klopp appears to have decided on the latter as his number one shot-stopper, one still senses that a world-class goalkeeper is needed if Liverpool are to sustain a title challenge in the years to come – one only needs to look at Ederson’s impact at Manchester City to see how big an influence a goalkeeper can have.
And landing Alisson would certainly be a nod in that direction.
The 25-year-old has kept a hugely impressive 21 clean sheets in 54 appearances for Roma since his move there back in 2016, and is currently the Brazil number one heading into this summer’s World Cup, which itself says a lot about his ability given Ederson’s efforts for City this term.
Clearly, Alisson is the calibre of goalkeeper Liverpool should be looking at this summer in a bid to bridge the gap on City in the Premier League next season, as that appears to be one of the last pieces of Klopp’s jigsaw having gone some way to solving his defensive issues with Virgil van Dijk’s arrival in January.
And with Valverde all but ruling Barcelona out of the race for the Roma ace, Liverpool must now seek to up the ante in the race for the 25-year-old this summer.
