Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see their side finish the job now in terms of the Champions League places.
The men from Anfield have had a good season up until now, of course, but surely need to finish in the top four if they are to count this campaign as a success.
The players, then, need to maintain their levels of performance and you can certainly apply that appraisal to Simon Mignolet.
The Belgian stopper’s form has really picked up of late and he looks like a strong option in goal but the problem is, how long is that going to last?
Indeed, the former Sunderland man has been through patches of good form before but he does revert to making mistakes eventually.
Certainly, he could keep his form up until the end of the season but if Liverpool get all sentimental over that and decide to not replace him in the summer, they’re at risk of getting left behind again in 2017/18.
For sure, the Belgian is a good option on his day but he does still have less good days consistently compared to the David de Gea’s and Hugo Lloris’ of this world.
Indeed, even on top form he is still arguably the worst ‘keeper of the top six clubs – bar Claudio Bravo at Manchester City – and that can’t do for a team that is looking to re-establish itself at the top of the tree.
Liverpool have been sentimental before and it’s caught them out in recent seasons, it’s time for them to rediscover a ruthless streak and sign a new stopper.
