TT Introduces: Southampton sensation Jake Vokins

Southampton and Liverpool supporters are very much looking forward to the 2018/19 Premier League season, as both sides seek to improve upon their efforts last time round.

Mark Hughes’ Saints narrowly avoided relegation to the Championship in finishing three points clear of the bottom three, and as such will certainly be hoping for much better this term to avoid the prospect of another challenging campaign. Yet things were significantly better for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who sealed a second successive top four finish in English football’s top-flight, at the same time proving their credentials in Europe by reaching the Champions League final, only to lose 3-1 to Real Madrid.

Nonetheless, both sets of supporters are eagerly anticipating the new season, although many Liverpudlians are already wondering who could be the next Southampton star to make the move to Anfield, with some Saints fans already dreading the prospect.

The likes of Adam Lallana, Nathaniel Clyne, Sadio Mane, and Virgil van Dijk have all swapped St Mary’s for Anfield in recent years, and 18-year-old sensation Jake Vokins could be well be the next destined for a move to Merseyside.

Ultimately, the full back has enjoyed regular football on the South Coast in the last few years in appearing for the Under-18 team and development side at Southampton, at the same time earning caps for the England Under-17s and Under-18s.

In fact, Vokins was just 15 when he first turned out for the Saints Under-18 team three years ago, and with 18 further appearances for the Under-18s last term, alongside six in Premier League 2 for the development side, things are certainly looking up for the young left back.

And given he is hugely adept at set plays and getting crosses into the box, alongside the strength and acceleration to complete his defensive duties, it appears that the 18-year-old has got everything required to be a top-quality modern-day full back.

And given the likes of Gareth Bale and Luke Shaw have graduated from the Saints academy in recent years, and both of whom have gone on to become outstanding full backs (although Bale has since become a quality attacker), it’s clear that the South Coast outfit know how to produce excellent full backs.

Thus, with Vokins seemingly destined for big things in his professional career, and given Liverpool’s consistent knack of signing some of Southampton’s brightest stars, the 18-year-old sensation appears destined to move to Anfield at some stage in his career.
