This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.
Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey could be on the move this summer, with Liverpool mentioned as a possible destination.
According to the Daily Express, Chelsea are readying a huge offer for the 22-year-old, but the Reds are also said to be interested in securing his services. And he could be a terrific addition to Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Bailey’s market valuation has taken a slight dip in recent months, which is quite hard to fathom. Despite already matching his Bundesliga goal tally of five from last season in around half the amount of games this term, his Transfermarkt valuation has gone from £36m (June 2019) to £33.3m. Even so, he still has plenty to offer.
The Jamaica international is currently averaging 1.6 dribbles per league game, which is around what Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino are managing (via WhoScored). He is also being dispossessed 1.4 times a match, which is not as often as Sadio Mane, who has an average of 1.7, and Salah, who has a disappointing 2.1.
Ultimately, Bailey looks capable of coming in for Salah or Mane and giving either of the two a breather. He can dribble in a similar manner, does not lose the ball as often and should be able to come up with a goal now and again. The Bayer Leverkusen winger is still, of course, very young, so you would expect his goal output to get better as he grows older.
As already alluded to, Bailey is having a better campaign compared to the last one, so he can feel hard done by to see his market valuation drop. But that should not deter Liverpool, who could have a player with a very bright future on their hands if they decide to sign him in the summer.
