This article forms part of our Valuation Evaluation feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at the increase or decrease of a player’s Transfermarkt valuation and whether it is justified or not.
According to The Athletic‘s James Pearce, Liverpool could make an approach for RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner in the coming weeks.
In a recent Q+A, Pearce revealed the player is keen to move to Anfield and that Jurgen Klopp really likes him. Elsewhere, German outlet Sport 1 (via FourFourTwo) have reported that Werner has a release clause worth an initial £25m, meaning Klopp could be about to land an absolute bargain.
As per Transfermarkt, Werner actually has a market valuation of £67.5m, a £9m increase from his June 2019 valuation. And that rise is understandable, really putting into perspective the incredible bit of business Liverpool could be about to do.
How much is Timo Werner worth?
£65m or more
Less than £65m
This season, the 23-year-old has been in red-hot form in front of goal, scoring 21 goals in 25 Bundesliga appearances. Based on that, he could be a great alternative to Roberto Firmino in that No.9 role.
As well as that, having also played on the left wing in the current campaign (as shown on WhoScored), Werner is a player who Klopp could also utilise out wide. He is currently averaging 1.8 dribbles per league game, which is actually slightly more than what Mohamed Salah (1.7) is managing, showing that he can carry the ball down the flank and cause problems for right-backs and right-sided central defenders.
Furthermore, for around £25m despite clearly being worth £67.5m, Klopp and the Reds will surely be laughing if they can get this one wrapped up.
