Just over a year ago now, Liverpool pulled off the world-record transfer of Southampton star Virgil van Dijk. While many at the time baulked at the £75m fee, the effortless Dutch defender has had a transformative effect on Merseyside, turning the Reds into an impressive unit after years of frailty.
Indeed, van Dijk’s impact at Anfield has been so good that we even took it upon ourselves to ask our Kop-mad readers to vote on their best ever January addition. Prior to his signing, club hero Luis Suarez would surely have been considered the best, considering what he did for Liverpool following his January 2011 transfer from Ajax.
However, as you can see from the results of our poll, 53% of those who voted believe van Dijk tops the Uruguayan, who left for Barcelona during the summer of 2014.
Undoubtedly one of the best defenders in the world at the moment, van Dijk can add himself to another illustrious Liverpool list if he manages to guide the club to a first ever Premier League title. If he does, the Holland captain can be considered an all-time great.
