Why Liverpool need to go all out on Virgil Van Dijk

Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern were bitterly disappointed after their club cooled off interest in Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk last month.

Their side have already been making waves in the transfer window with Mohamed Salah signing in a club-record deal, while Dominic Solanke also joined the Reds on a free transfer from rivals Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were suggested to have been closing in on a deal for Van Dijk, but their pursuit fell through after Southampton complained to the FA over foul play. It appeared the Reds were caught red handed after tapping up the Dutchman.

Nevertheless, Van Dijk has now courted interest from domestic rivals, including Arsenal and it’s up to Liverpool need to swallow their pride and act fast if they want to strengthen their defensive line.

Klopp’s side conceded 42 times in their 38 games last season. 16 more than second place Spurs and only 11 less than relegated Middlesborough.

Joel Matip enjoyed a solid start to his spell in the Premier League following his move from Schalke and Dejan Lovren continues to improve – but surely even the most ardent Liverpool supporter cannot envisage either player becoming world beaters.

With Mamadou Sakho firmly on the sidelines and Ragnar Klavan still inexperienced, Liverpool should not hesitate any longer to do go all out on Van Dijk. The 26 year-old who is terrific in the air and comfortable dribbling the ball out from the back would slot perfectly into Klopp’s side.

Liverpool have already raided Southampton for their best products three years on the trot – how’s one more summer going to hurt?
