Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to seven points following a 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal.
Liverpool fell behind at Anfield for the first time in 2018 when Ainsley Maitland-Niles opened the scoring. However, they were soon ahead with Roberto Firmino grabbing a first-half brace before Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah effectively ended the game at half-time. It was more of the same after the interval with Firmino scooping his hat-trick from 12 yards following a foul on Dejan Lovren.
Once again Jurgen Klopp utilised the 4-2-3-1 system with Salah acting as the lone striker with Firmino as the number ten. Despite getting on the scoresheet, the Egypt international struggled to impose himself with his back to goal for most the game. Now the transfer window is open, Liverpool should look to sign a top forward to allow Salah to move back on the right wing.
One man they could target is Sevilla forward – Wissam Ben Yedder. Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the Frenchman earned a move to Spain after spending six goal-laden seasons in France with Toulouse. The Spanish side secured his services for only £8m and Ben Yedder has proven to be one of their best signings in recent years.
Once again the 28-year-old has been in fine form, scoring eight goals in 14 La Liga appearances, the forward has become an excellent finisher over the last few years. Ben Yedder also holds the ball up extremely well, providing five assists for his team-mates, making him ideal for Klopp’s system. Alongside the talent available in Liverpool’s front line, Ben Yedder’s abilities would be elevated even further.
Now approaching the prime of his career, his arrival on Merseyside could give the Reds the boost they need to secure the title in the coming weeks.
