Liverpool will kick off their 2018/19 Premier League campaign against West Ham on Sunday.
The Reds secured back-to-back finishes in the top four for the first time in over a decade last season and also reached the Champions League final. Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to add a trophy to his achievements at Anfield finally. After spending £170m on new players, Liverpool look well equipped to mount a challenge on all fronts.
The signing of Xherdan Shaqiri may have flown under the radar after Liverpool splashed out considerable sums to bring the likes of Fabinho, Naby Keita and Alisson Becker to Merseyside. However, the Swiss international has quickly won the fans over following some superb performances during pre-season.
Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the former Bayern Munich man netted a sensational overhead kick after coming off the bench against Manchester United to make his Liverpool debut. He also assisted Daniel Sturridge during the 4-1 rout. His form continued against Napoli as Liverpool ran out 5-0 winners against the Italians.
His form will give Klopp a selection dilemma heading into the Premier League opener. With Adam Lallana injured and Jordan Henderson missing all of pre-season, the German may be tempted to give Shaqiri a start against the Hammers.
Primarily a right winger, the 26-year-old has excelled in a central role during pre-season and could occupy a similar position at the weekend. Adding Shaqiri into the mix alongside Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah could be crucial to breaking Manuel Pellegrini’s side down.
Liverpool fans, would you like to see Xherdan Shaqiri in the midfield three? Let us know!
