Liverpool’s agreement with £7.2m-rated prodigy is more important than Emre Can’s future

The Liverpool fans are growing increasingly concerned in the Transfer Tavern due to the lack of clarity over Emre Can’s future, but there is reason to believe that the club should prioritise their contract negotiations on other players in the squad.

Emre Can’s future at Liverpool has been hanging in the balance since the beginning of the season. With no agreement in place to extend his current deal, it seems more than likely that the German international will depart the club at the end of the season, much to the disappointment of the Reds faithful propping up our bar.

Can has been in brilliant form for the club for the vast majority of the season so far and, he has even worn the captain’s armband on a handful of occasions as a result of his fine form. Losing him this summer would be a bitter blow for Liverpool to take, particularly as the club would get nothing in return if he allows his contract to expire at the end of June.

However, the blow from Can’s departure will certainly be softened by the imminent arrival of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, so the supporters should not be overly concerned by the prospect of Can leaving the club. Can is not the only player in line for a contract extension according to reports in the Daily Mirror, as Liverpool have handed Trent Alexander-Arnold a new contract after he triggered an incentive-based clause.

Alexander-Arnold has been in phenomenal form for the club this season for a player who is only 19-years-old. The standard of his performances have steadily been increasing throughout the season and, he managed to find his best form at just the right moment during Liverpool’s Champions League clash with Manchester City recently.

Over the course of the two legs Alexander-Arnold managed to achieve what very few, if any defenders have managed to achieve this season by keeping Leroy Sane quiet for the vast majority of the tie. His quality on the European stage was a gentle reminder to both Liverpool and clubs across Europe of the scale of his enormous potential, so there’s no doubt that securing his long-term future is one of the most important deals the Reds could have completed this summer.

Europe’s heavyweights will have been alerted to Alexander-Arnold’s quality when he faced Manchester City, so Liverpool must be swift to offer him a new deal, otherwise his head could be turned by the prospect of a move away from the club this summer.

Liverpool should do everything they can to persuade Can to remain at Anfield, but their priority should be Alexander-Arnold, as he has the potential to cement the right-back spot and become a genuine club legend in the years to come.
