The last couple of seasons have not been too kind for Alberto Moreno at Liverpool, have they? The Spaniard has seen the emergence of Andy Robertson ruin any chance he had of being in Jurgen Klopp’s first-team at Anfield, although it would be fair to say he would have had to have improved significantly for anything like that to happen.
It appears the former Sevilla left-back is destined to leave Anfield when his contract expires in the summer as he is yet to sign a new deal and it would seem he could be about to make a surprise move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, Moreno is thought to be a potential target for Barcelona in the summer.
The Catalan giants are keen to bolster their options on the left and see the fact that he is available on a free transfer as an attractive opportunity and one they will consider.
No-one at Liverpool will be surprised to see Moreno leave in the summer as he has failed to make a really positive impression during the five seasons he has been at the club. Brendan Rodgers splashed out £16.2million on him back in 2014, however, it appears Klopp is prepared to cut the club’s losses on him.
However, what will come as a surprise is the fact that Barcelona could look at making a move for him in the summer as the 26-year-old has not really shown any signs that he would be capable of playing for them consistently enough.
Another argument that may be had regarding a move to the La Liga giants is that he is unlikely to get the first-team football he wants on a regular basis and could probably be ending up swapping his place on the substitutes bench at Anfield for one at the Camp Nou.
As mentioned, a move is right for Moreno to pursue in the summer as Robertson has clearly become Klopp’s first-choice, whilst the German has also opted for James Milner at times when the Scotland international is unavailable but the Spaniard is – which goes to show how lowly thought of the defender is at the moment.
It is a story that is likely to go on for a little while, however, with him certain to leave Liverpool in the summer, those at Anfield will not really mind where the left-back ends up in the future.
